What if our elected officials actually elected in by at least 51% of voters no matter how many candidates ran? The United States would be represented by the people. Instant-Runoff Voting is a simple answer. How does this work and is it really better than the current system?
Method
When voting you select your top three candidates in order of preference. If no candidate receives 51% of the vote a runoff occurs. The candidate with the lowest votes is removed and his/her votes are given to the other candidates based on the voter’s second choice. Wish you could vote no to the whole list of terrible candidates and it would actually would do something? Feel powerless from the list of bad options during election season? There currently is an initiative to add a “None of the Above” option to every ballet in the US. I’m proposing we make that change and add consequences if “None of the Above” wins. Yes, we can fill in the blank, but sometimes we can’t even think of a viable uncle or brother we would like to pencil in.
Wouldn’t it be nice if every time you thought about helping a candidate run for public office you weren’t first asked for money? Wouldn’t it be nice if even the poorest individual could run for public office if he or she was the most qualified? I know it sounds like a dream land. The wonderful reality of this story is that it actually exists in a handful of states.
